Different types of Community Service
Do you ever wonder to yourself, what exactly is community service? Well, generally speaking, it means exactly what it sounds like – a service for your community. Done as a volunteer service, individuals choose a way to service or better the community, then donate their time to getting the task or tasks done. The people that participated are not compensated, and are most often not recognized for their work, as their goal is to help a town or individuals, not be praised for their efforts. Community service can also be handed down as a sentence to someone who has broken a law, or a set of laws. It can also be a way for parents to show their children responsibility, and to get them involved in helping others without pay or recognition.
There are many different types of community service to participate in. Typically, if you are an offender and your sentence is community service, then you will not have a choice where you volunteer at, the courts will choose where you are most needed. However, if you are looking to participate, or looking to have your kids participate, then there are many types of community service you can choose from.
If you have a resale shop, or a good will in your hometown, than that can be a good place for you to start. The people that work at these places typically do not get paid, or if they do, very little, as the whole goal of those shops is to provide people with goods at a low cost, therefore no one benefits from any profit that is made, as there typically is no profit. Bags of clothing and other general goods are dropped off daily, and they need people to sort through those things to make sure they are good enough for resale. This can be a fun, interesting job that enables you to meet a variety of good people.
Another excellent community service job is to work as a big brother/big sister. There are many kids out there that don’t have siblings, and their parents work long hours to help provide for them, and therefore don’t have anyone with them after school and on some weekends. You can be a good role model for those kids by hanging out with them at those times, and not allowing them to roam the streets, where they may just get into trouble.
Building a home for a family that cannot afford one of their own is a fantastic way to help the community, but this can take a little more of your time, and you need to be sure that you have the time to donate. As with any community service, if you are participating, you are being relied upon to do your job, regardless of whether you are getting paid or not. Whereas you could work at a resale shop for one week and move on to something else, building a house takes a little more time than that, so make sure you have the time to donate if you participate in this service.
Anything you choose to do, participating in community service can be nothing but a positive experience for everyone involved. If you happen to be one of those that are sentenced to it, then make the best of it by realizing you are helping out the community you live in.
